Medicare & Mental Health Treatment Plans

If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) prepared by your GP or psychiatrist, you are eligible for a Medicare rebate on sessions with Carmel. The rebate applies to up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year (additional sessions may be available in some circumstances — discuss with your GP).

To access Medicare rebates, you'll need to bring your MHTP referral to your first session, or have it sent to Carmel directly. Sessions are billed and rebated through Medicare's Online Claiming system. Please contact your GP to discuss whether a Mental Health Treatment Plan is appropriate for you.

Carmel is also a WorkCover NSW Accredited Practitioner and can see clients with approved WorkCover claims. Please mention this when making your booking.

Appointment policy

Cancellation & rescheduling

If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, please do so with as much notice as possible. A minimum of 48 hours' notice is required to avoid a cancellation fee.

Appointments cancelled or not attended within 48 hours of the scheduled time may incur a late cancellation fee. This fee is not eligible for Medicare rebate.

Carmel understands that unexpected circumstances arise — please contact her as soon as possible if something comes up. She is happy to discuss the situation on a case-by-case basis.

Payment

Payment is due at the time of your session. Payments and Medicare rebates are processed securely through my booking system — Halaxy. Medicare rebates are processed at the time of payment where applicable.

Booking FAQs

Questions about booking, fees, or Medicare.

No. You can book directly with Carmel without a GP referral. However, if you wish to access a Medicare rebate on your sessions, you will need a Mental Health Treatment Plan prepared by your GP or psychiatrist.

Under the Better Access initiative, most people are eligible for up to 10 individual therapy sessions per calendar year with a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Your GP can refer for 10 sessions or refer for 6 sessions, after which they will need to review and re-refer for the remaining sessions.

Your GP and Medicare can advise on your specific entitlements. These can vary depending on your circumstances.

Yes. Medicare rebates apply to both in-person and telehealth sessions with Carmel, provided you have a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan.

Some private health funds include psychology or mental health cover in their extras policies. Whether you can claim will depend on your fund and level of cover. Please check with your insurer.

Note: You cannot claim both a Medicare rebate and a private health insurance rebate for the same session.

That's completely fine — you don't need to know in advance. Just book a standard client appointment. During your initial consultation, Carmel will discuss your situation and recommend the most appropriate approach, which may or may not include EMDR.
