How therapy
with Carmel works
Beginning therapy can feel daunting. Carmel takes a gentle, collaborative approach — you'll never be pushed to move faster than you're ready to.
Initial consultation
Your first session is an opportunity to talk about what's brought you to therapy, what you're hoping to get out of it, and any questions you have. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with.
Understanding your situation
Carmel takes time to understand your history, current circumstances, and goals. Together, you'll develop a shared sense of what you're working toward and how to get there.
Evidence-based treatment
Drawing on approaches including EMDR, trauma-informed CBT, DBT, schema, ACT and narrative therapy, Carmel tailors her approach to what will be most effective for you.
Ongoing review
Progress is regularly reviewed together. Therapy is a collaboration — your feedback shapes how sessions are conducted, and you're free to raise anything at any time.
Session details
Carmel offers sessions in person at her Bowral consulting rooms and via telehealth for clients across Australia.
Session length
Standard sessions are 50 minutes. An initial consultation may run slightly longer to allow adequate time to discuss your situation and needs.
Location & telehealth
In-person sessions are available in Bowral, Southern Highlands NSW. Telehealth sessions are available for clients throughout Australia via a secure video platform.
Frequency
Session frequency depends on your circumstances and goals. Following your intake phone call Carmel recommends starting with three weekly appointments. Once your treatment goals have been clarified, the frequency of appointments is adjusted and agreed upon together.
Medicare rebates
Carmel is a Medicare-registered psychologist. If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, you are eligible for a Medicare rebate on 10 sessions per calendar year.
Confidentiality
Everything you share is confidential. Carmel will discuss the limits of confidentiality (which are set by law) during your first session.
WorkCover
Carmel is a WorkCover NSW Accredited Practitioner.
EMDR therapy may be recommended
Where appropriate, Carmel may incorporate EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing — into your treatment. EMDR is an evidence-based therapy particularly effective for trauma and PTSD. If it's recommended for you, Carmel will explain how it works and what to expect.
